Working with Suicidal Behaviour
Target Group
No prior training in this field is assumed, although it is helpful if participants work in similar backgrounds. The course will be adapted to reflect the experience, work roles and settings of the participants.Duration
Two consecutive days.Training Style
The training has a “fringe theatre” feel brought about by the trainer’s use of theatrical devices to bring the case material to life. This is backed up with lectures, structured exercises, quizzes and group discussion.Trainer

This is a practice-based course aimed at helping participants to work more effectively and appropriately with people who experience suicidal thoughts, or display suicidal behaviourContent
- The epidemiology of suicide according to race, religion, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, occupation, marital status, health, etc.
- Exploration of personal reactions and dilemmas in working with suicidal clients
- Assessing indicators of immediate and long term risk
- Working to contain an immediate suicidal crisis
- Working with longer term with depression and persistent underlying risk
- Working with people who are influenced by destructive hallucinations
- A brief exploration of deliberate self-harm
